The developing seed heads or "plumes" of the Miscanthus sinenensis 'Zebrinus' arch over the cross-banded leaves in autumn. All of the grasses are left uncut over the winter, providing architectural interest with their dried stalks and leaves.

Erianthus ravennae, which grows 12'-14', makes a bold statement as a specimen plant in the lawn. In the Spring, all grasses are cut back to the ground, but quickly shoot up to their full height within weeks.

Arundo donax 'Versicolor' also grows well as a specimen plant in the lawn when given plenty of water. This plant is often mistaken for corn by Scotsman's guests! He also grows the plain green variety.

Here, Miscanthus sp. (left) and Aster Tartaricus (right) frame the walkway to the chicken house.
