A
year-round garden escape, on video.
For over two years I captured images of this
extraordinary garden in Virginia. In the Spring
of 1999, I decided to produce a high-quality
video documenting a year in the life of the
garden. The result is this timeless video
entitled Beyond the Garden Gate,
which reveals the wonderful nuances of a garden
through a series of beautiful music and moving
images.
The video starts off with a time-lapse of a
winter thaw, crocuses and daffodils opening, and
a beautiful spectacle of spring tree blossoms.
Cascading maple seed pods and dandelion
"parachutes" lead you on a journey and
into a montage of more spring growth - purple
irises opening, waterlilies reaching for the sky,
white peonies popping open in unison, lotus
leaves unfolding, along with red roses and
honeysuckle.
After a rousing thunderstorm, summer bursts
forth with a myriad of blossoms as you follow a
butterfly through a field of wildflowers. Each
passing summer day reveals more and more for the
eyes to see, plus surprise creatures visiting the
garden.
Witness an inexhaustible display of bird life,
including doves, robins, woodpeckers, bluejays,
and hummingbirds as they start their nesting and
garden feasting. Then a vignette of interesting
and colorful insects that will make you
appreciate the great diversity of their miniature
world. Included are praying mantis, walking
sticks, ladybugs, butterflies, and dozens more.
You'll also see time-lapse of magnolias
flowering, cacti blooming, slow-motion of a
hummingbird feeding inches from the camera lens,
fireflies mating at sunset, a gaggle of baby
geese mature from cuddly goslings to adults,
butterflies dancing and feeding on budlia, and
dozens of orchids in full bloom. Finally, after a
moving display of the end of the growing season
and fall, witness a rare and gentle Virginia
snowfall.
